Farewell Facebook!

So I did it. I deactivated my facebook account today. Why? Because I was sick and tired of feeling like it was such a big part of my life - like walking the dog, cooking dinner, going to work. My interaction with Facebook had become almost like a normal part of my everyday routine. Enough already!!
I grew so attached to it, at first I did'nt think that it was that much of an issue and laughed it off. It was only until recently when I would log on and see friends checking in wherever they went, taking photos of what they had eaten and updating statuses every day (sometimes more than once) that I realised that there are people out there who get seriously addicted to Facebook and feel the need to check in wherever they go and tell all of their online friends what they are doing because they are looking for approval from their peers.

Five years ago, when I first signed up for Facebook, I actually enjoyed the ability to reconnect with people who I hadn't seen in a while. Then it snowballed, and all of a sudden there was the ability for people who you didn't really want to re connect with to find you. Take the girl who ended up marrying my ex. She found me on facebook I did the 'right' thing by speaking to her but then when it all started to get a little too much and I found myself feeling like she was rubbing all that they had in my face I put an end to it. With that came the barrage of abusive inbox messages and abuse which I can now laugh off but at the time I was left to wonder why I was being treated this way. Especially when any sane person would have done the same thing that I did.

Then there are the people who think they can just add you and delete you like your friendship means nothing. I mean seriously, what is social networking doing to society? You wouldn't treat friends like that in reality- would you? I sure as hell wouldn't! Furthermore, the people who bitch about others in status updates make social media at times remind me of high school!!

So I am done, I don't need facebook to interact with people, or to see which one of my friends has posted countless photos of food, children or simly mundane posts asking "what should we have for dinner tonight?" Quite honestly, if you can't make decisions as simple as that, maybe you should take a long hard look at yourself.

Changes

Change is inevitable, you can’t avoid it whilst you are a living, breathing member of humanity. Some people see change as exciting, new beginnings, a clean slate, something to work hard for and showcase your talent.

Last week, myself and my colleagues were presented with the concept of a change. A big one at that. For me, I could hardly contain my excitement as I signed on the dotted line. For many of my other colleagues however, this has not been the case at all. This change has been met with the force of people uniting against resistance. Like a picket line, at times it felt as if I was being singled out, judged and victimised for the decisions I have made for myself, our  lifestyle and my career. I have not spent seven years of my life studying my backside off to be told this morning “well if you don’t want to move you can spend your days reading pH’s in a laboratory.”

I have been pressured, and at times bullied into joining the union to seek advice for new conditions etc. To those people who are responsible for this, I have lost all respect for each and every one of you for the position you continue to put me in.

This morning we were all brought together where people argued that they needed more time to consider this proposed change. My argument to this (and I am pretty sure I stood alone, as I continue to be singled out because I am already committed) was that it was unfair to those who have already signed up.

I have found the behaviour of my colleagues this week to be absolutely appalling, particulary when you stop to look around and see industries simply walking in the door and tapping employees on the shoulder and marching them out. We have been presented with an amazing opportunity, where we all have job security, but people are too busy looking at the negatives to see the amazing oppurtunities and changes that this presents all of us.

Furthermore, I have had a lot of personal ups and downs as of late and my colleagues are aware of this (which I will address in my next post) however, they continue to apply undue pressure to me and become vindictive towards myself and the positive attitude that I carry with me wherever I go. I personally see this whole thing for the 100% positive changes it will make to all of our lives and careers, and will not let ANYONE stand in the way of what I want.

My attitude in life is to never ever give up on your dreams; and this time I definetly will not go down without a fight!!
